Hands-on Emergency Preparedness Citizens Academy 

These classes are a mix of week nights and weekends in May, June, and July. Classes range from 2 hours to 5 hours (Saturday). 

Registration is required and a max of 20 participants.

Those that attend will receive:

  • Free PGFPD Citizen's Academy T-shirt
  • Safety PPE
  • Free 2 year CPR/AED American Heart Association Certificate
  • Free 2 year American Heart Association First Aid Certificate
  • Free Disaster preparedness kit intended to sustain you for up to 3 days
  • Free lunch on the Saturday classes
  • A certificate of completion once all classes have been attended.

We ask that when you sign up for the Emergency Preparedness Citizen's Academy ("The Academy"), that you attend all four sessions.

What's Covered 

CPR/AED and Adavanced First Aid 
A person practices CPR on a mannequin, with an officer observing. An AED is nearby on the floor.
  • Adult, child, and infant CPR, AED usage, choking incidents and narcan administration.
  • Basic and advanced first aid skills for burns, fractures, crush injury, bleeding, heat exhaustion, cold emergencies and others.
  • Managing medical emergencies: heart attack, stroke, seizures and others. 
  • EMS Skills (for fun)
    • Surgical Crics
    • Endotracheal Intubation
Fire Extinguishment, Extrication and Rescue Techniques, and Utility Shut Off
  • Fire extinguisher operation (PASS method) with live fire
  • Exterior fire ground hose operations
  • Learn basic extrication and rescue techniques.
  • Shutting off gas in a disaster
Building an Emergency Preparedness Kit and Family Plan and Priorities in a Disaster
  • Disaster Priorities- Life Safety, Incident Stabilization, Property Conservation
  • Key components of a disaster kit (water, food, medications, blankets, flashlight, batteries, spare clothes, tools, etc.)
  • Customizing kits for family needs: infants, seniors, pets, and disabilities.
  • Importance of having a go-bag for quick evacuations.
  • Developing a family communication and evacuation plan.
  • Being self-sufficient and sustainable for up to five days. 
  • Gain participation interest for Red Cross Shelter Training and Disaster Action Team Members

The "Academy" includes the following in-person classes:

  1. CPR/AED (includes a free 2 year AHA certification) 
    1. Date: May 15, 2025
    2. Time: 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
    3. Location: Station 1- 202 Main Street, Platteville
  2. Advanced First Aid and Medical Skills (Includes a free 2 Year AHA certification).
    1. Date: May 17, 2025
    2. Time: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
    3. Lunch is provided for those that attend
    4. Location: PGFPD Station 2 Training Grounds- 14679 CR 42, Gilcrest 
  3. Fire Extinguishment, Rescue Techniques, and Utility Control
    1. Date: June 21, 2025
    2. Time: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
    3. Lunch is provided for those that attend
    4. Leave with a free pair of glasses and leather gloves
    5. Location: PGFPD Station 2 Training Grounds- 14679 CR 42, Gilcrest
  4. Building a Disaster Preparedness Kit and Family Plan
    1. Date: July 9, 2025
    2. Time: 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
    3. Leave with a free disaster preparedness kit with supplies for up to 3 days
    4. Location: Station 1- 202 Main Street, Platteville

Age and Physical Requirements

Must be at least 12 years old and physically capable of performing CPR compressions and holding a fire extinguisher. 

Residency Requirement

Must live in the PGFPD 144 square mile district boundries (Zip Codes of 80651, 80623, select addresses in 80621, 80642, and 80645.
